Maternity Coverage in Singapore

Planning for maternity as an expat in Singapore requires careful consideration due to high medical costs. Maternity coverage is often an optional add-on to inpatient and outpatient plans, while employer-provided insurance may have limitations. Key factors to review include childbirth costs, pregnancy and delivery complications, newborn and congenital condition coverage, and waiting periods. Securing coverage early ensures financial protection.

Routine Outpatient Maternity

For certain outpatient services related to routine prenatal and postnatal care, the following benefits apply

  • Physician consultation fees, diagnostic scans and tests, and medicines or drugs prescribed by a physician or licensed midwifery practice or clinic for routine pre-natal and post-natal services.

  • Co-insurance Waiver: The20% co-insurance is waived if selected under the outpatient module for the above services, up to 45 days following birth.

Important Waiting Period
  • Waiting Period: Maternity insurance typically has a waiting period of 8 to 24 months, meaning coverage must be secured well before conception. Without it, pregnancy-related expenses and newborn coverage may not be included, leading to significant out-of-pocket costs.
